Since checking the "open new windows in a new tab instead" box does not work, how do I prevent a new window from opening when clicking on certain links?

When I click on certain links, it causes a new window to open. I cannot think of a scenario where I would ever want this to happen, so I am wondering if it is possible to prevent it.

Right clicking on the link does give me the option of opening it in a new tab, but it seems ridiculous to have to do that every time one wants to click on a link.
