Hello,

I have my Samsung S4 I9505 set to English language. A few days ago Firefox started using Chinese. I can't understand anything at all, so that I could not even use the settings menu if I knew where it is.

Can someone please tell me how I can set it back to English please? Nothing else on the phone changed language, but Firebox alone.

Hey Straydog, Forgive me if I am a little confused.

But to change the language you can assume that the menus are identical, just replaced with different characters. However according to the help article it is done from the phone settings menu. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-default-language-firefox-mobi...

In searching for more info it looks like you solved it by unintalling and clearing the app data to get rid of the stored preferences: http://androidforums.com/samsung-gala.../840960-browser-hijacker-in-chinese.html

Hi Straydog, How to change language This feature is not currently supported, so it may be the version downloaded or an add on. Please download it again from the play store.

Thank you for your reply.

Before I posted my question I read the instructions on your link, but as you can see it does not apply to my case because I have always had my phone on English.

Then I followed your suggestion and installed a new one. It did not solve, so I deleted Firefox data, uninstalled and reinstalled. It did not solve it either.

What else can I do, please?

You can change the language of firefoxwith ease . this might be helpful for you Firefox > Preferences > Content > Languages Also Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems. Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now" "Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems: Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Thanks, Chandan_Baba, but I can't follow your suggestions unless you kindly indicate their positions on the menus because, as I said, everything appears in Chinese and I am a complete nullity on that language.

It might help if someone knowing Chinese would give a hand even because (I think of this now) it might be connected with an add-on, as guigs2 said. I could add a screen shot.

Straydog:

Chandan_Baba's instructions are for Firefox Desktop not Mobile.

You can download Firefox 28.0.1 in the English languge by going to the following website on your Android device and selecting the fennec-28.0.1.en-US.android-arm.apk file:

Make sure that the option "Allow installation of unknown sources" is enabled in your Settings. You can do this by following the below instructions:

  • From the Homescreen go to Apps > Settings > More.
  • Go to Security > Device administration.
  • Check "Unknown Sources"

Moses, I see that Chandan_Baba Has not read my starting post where this is clearly about a smartphone.

Maybe someone knowing Chinese can help. Can you call any or your kind Chinese colleagues who can assist me in English, please?

Straydog:

I have not seen ANY Chinese contributors on this forum in the 5 years I've been contributing. There is however a Chinese version of SUMO (https://support.mozilla.org/zh-CN/home) and there are also localization members/leaders for the zh-CN locale (https://support.mozilla.org/zh-CN/kb/locales/zh-CN)

To clarify, is your Android langugage in Chinese or is Firefox in Chinese?

Can you go to about:addons and let me know which ones you have?

Thank you very much Moses.

The phone language is English 2070, and only Firefox was changed to Chinese. Maybe it is browser hijacker because at the same time I noticed a new icon on the home screen (picture attached). I don't understand the few characters underneath, but when I tap on it the light and the camera are turned on, but not recording (but not operative) and when I tap on the back button Firefox comes up in Chinese. It is also in Chinese when I tap on Firefox icon. So I just can't use Firefox. I could manage all of this on a PC, but I am ignorant on smartphones.

I will look up your links tomorrow because it is very late for mu right now.

The links are not relevant to this issue. I was simply pointing out that SUMO is Chinese supported.

Firefox help has those help sites of your links and I could try there, but Web translators do not translate secure (https) pages, and I can't even guess where to place a translated post. So what would you suggest, please?

It seems that there is no help for getting rid of this hijacker because it is in Chinese.

Rachel,

That's awesome how AndroidForums does a little Firefox tech support ;)

Thank you guigs2 for your dedicated help. So that, if someone is awesome that is you.

I've solved the most important part of the issue as I explained on the Android forum. It was not simply annoying, but really impossible for me. Associated with Chinese language was a lot of what seemed to be ads, links, etc., etc. While I realise that the menus are identical, only having different characters according to the language, I never new them by heart, so that could only work if I had a list on my hand to match them, which is unpracticable.

The other part of the issue is the icon that appeared on my home screen when Firefox changed language, what makes me strongly believe they are connected. I didn't mention the pkg.apk here because this is not an Android forum, but it may belong to many other application. I have just now searched a very old full backup of the phone by MyPhoneExplorer and I found 58 files with that name, all with different sizes. So the icon it may or may not belong to this issue, even if I'm almost sure it does. I recognise many of the application directories where they are, but far from all. Deleting the icon does not kill what put it in there, it is just a shortcut.

Anyway, the language issue is gone and I only have to thank all the people who tried to help me.

Hey Straydog, thats alot of files. If this was something that came in that was not intended, have you considered a virus scanner application for the phone? http://lifehacker.com/5891576/the-best-and-worst-antivirus-apps-fo... are a few, though I think there is one called AppGaurd?

more options

Hi guigs2, please to read you again.

That search was done on my Win7 PC, and as I said on an old backup, too old for me to want to use it. That pkg.apk was found inside folders containing applications, or, in other words, files included in most downloaded Android programs. A few examples are: com.samsung.cares.global-1; com.fjsoft.myphoneexplorer.client-1; com.guildsoftware.barometer-1; com.geeksoft.filexpert.plugin1-1. They are not the same because they are all of different sizes.

As for scanning, on the my thread you mentioned above, on the Android forum, I wrote on my last post that I had scanned with Lookout, Avast, Trust and Bitdefender. Lately I also scanned with Malwarebites. I also wrote there that only Bitdefender found a pkg.apk file as a threat. I tried to delete it, but it sent a message "pkg.apk could not be deleted".

Do you think my phone has a virus? That backup was made over three months ago and I am not often online on the phone because of the costs.

Edit: I edited this post three times, trying to put the file names on different lines, but it only works on double line paragraphs. Funny and strange...
