Ctrl-W will not close the last tab/window

more options

Ctrl-W's functionality has changed. Ctrl-W will not close the last tab/window. Ctrl-Shift-W must be used. Keyconfig will allow defining both {Close tab} and {Close window} as Ctrl-W but {close window} doesn't work. I know that the mouse can be used to perform these operations but I prefer keyboard control. Disabling {Close window} doesn't allow Ctrl-W to work as both {Close Tab} and {Close Window}. I've been stumbling with the "updated" software for sometime now and am considering another primary browser. All the other browsers utilize this simple keyboard function. I really like Mozilla software but this appears to be a major problem. Is there any way to get the Ctrl-W to function as both a {close tab} and {Close Window} or are there any plans to bring back the Ctrl-W functionality? Finding a solution to this problem would be really great.

Operating System: Windows 7 FireFox 31.0

Glad to help.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

There are thousands of useful things here.

Place a button on the toolbar to close Firefox. Display an options page where you can see and edit the FF hot keys. Backup your system.

You think of it, it may be there waiting for you.

Hello, Try this addon , this adds a "Shortcut" Panel to the Firefox settings window where you'll be able to set it up as you wish.

There is a setting so that the last tab in the window will not close. <Control> W only closes tabs.

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type about:config. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type; browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab and set it to True.

FredMcD, Thanks for the about:config tip. I'm familiar with about:config and so this solution was quick and sweet. CloseWindowWithLastTab works great! I really appreciate the information and you have no idea.

NorRetsim,

I'll check out the plugin, but the closeWindowWithLastTab is an excellent solution. I maybe able to use it for other keyboard configuration.
