In Thunderbird/Tools/Options/Composition/Spelling the language drop-down-box is not available, and the language line is blank.
The drop-down-box to chose languages is pale colored showing that this option is unavailable. Clicking on it does nothing; also, no language appears in the language line. Not being able to use the drop-down-box makes following the instructions for installing a dictionary impossible.
I have installed dictionaries in Firefox, but they do not appear in Thunderbird.

I am very confused here.
You say "I have installed dictionaries in Firefox, but they do not appear in Thunderbird." Nor should they... they are two different applications. Your latest response still leaves me confused.
"I've downloaded dictionaries, but they don't appear in "Download More Dictionaries" That link takes you to a web page showing available dictionaries for Thunderbird. So I simply fail to understand what your expecting to see there, perhaps something you downloaded in a browser window? I really do not understand.
Some dictionaries come in the form of add-ons https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/search/?q=dictionary&appver=31.0&platform=windows and must be installed as such.

see the download more dictionaries link right under the drop down.
I've downloaded dictionaries, but they don't appear in "Download More Dictionaries" so I can't access anything. There's nothing in that drop-down box either. (I've used Thunderbird for years and this problem occurred after an automatic update.)

Thank you Matt. I used the drop-down box in the add-ons manager to install add-on from file.
