I have my home page set to MSN.com and before all my problems with Firefox 34 started it had always opened to that page. Now suddenly, even though the home page is still set to MSN.com Firefox is opening to something called http.com. I have no idea where this is coming from or how to stop it. The images I've uploaded will show that the home page is still set and what I get when I open Firefox. Does anyone know what is going on and how to stop it?

http.com I was trying to find something that would tell me how to get rid of this thing. This all started when Mozilla automatically updated me to Firefox 34 and I haven't been able to get rid of it ever since. That second image is the first thing I got when I opened Firefox for the first time after is was updated.

You can check the home page setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

I've already been through all of these steps and things for setting the home page. None of them work to stop this http.com (which is apparently some kind of virus or malware). And like I said, this seems to have come with the recent update to Firefox 34 because I never had it before.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

OK with the exception of Microsoft Safety Scanner and Kaspersky (both of which failed to download) I downloaded and ran the other programs on your list. I already had AVG and Malwarebytes and had run them. Not a one of these did me any good at all. I opened Firefox and bingo! there was the damned site for http:com again. So now what do I try?

Did you check the target line in the (desktop) shortcut that you use to launch Firefox?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Yes, I have checked the target line. Yes, I have done a complete uninstall and new install. I even deleted the personal information since I have the bookmarks backed up. Maybe what I should be saying is that when I open Firefox it opens with two windows and the front one is that freaking http.com thing and the other is my actual homepage. And I know this has to be something with Firefox because IE doesn't do it. All I want to do is get rid of the http.com thing when I open Firefox.

You can try:

Been there and done that already too. Found that one while doing a search for information on how to remove this. Didn't work. I'm going to try doing a complete uninstall and installing 33.1.1 instead. Then I'll shut off the update function and see how that works.

I had already tried that other thing you suggested as well. However after uninstalling completely the 34.0.5 version I restarted my computer before installing 33.1.1. I then immediately went into options and turned off the update function. Shut down Firefox. Started it again and glory be that darned thing seems to be gone since it didn't happen. I think I'll just quietly sit here using 33.1.1 and avoiding 34.0.5 as much as possible. Thanks for all the help you have tried to give me.!!

Looks like I was wrong. It worked OK the first time but I just opened Firefox again and there was the damned thing again. So I still need help to get rid of it. And no, it didn't update to 34.0.5 so that isn't it.
