Why does clicking a link often cause unrelated pages to open?

I read the NYT online and click on links to open them in a new tab. Often, that causes another window to open that has no obvious tie to what I'm trying to do. Sometimes, it also causes tabs to open in the current window with no tie.

Recomend getting adblock for firefox.

if you still get unrelated links you should consider scanning for Malware on you computer (this could be an installed program or an extension). I would recommend Malwarebytes as it is somewhat free to use.
