All of the e-mails in my inbox from 10/05/2016 back are either not opening when clicked, opening with the text from a different sender or with un-formatted text from several different senders all jumbled up together. All attachments appear to have been lost. This only affects the inbox of my primary e-mail account, sub-folders and 2 other accounts remain un-affected.

An un-responcive e-mail will retain the header information from the last correctly opened e-mail while those which open with jumbled un-formatted text have blank headers.

Is there anything I can do to recover those currently lost e-mails or has this, some very important, documentation been lost forever?

10/05/2016 Is that the 10th May or the 5th October. Not that it really matters, but I am sure you thought you were being specific.

Right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button. That rebuilds the index. it may well see mail prior to the date you mention simply disappear. If that is the case, look in your anti virus for a file inbox that was deleted or quarantined about the time you noticed you had an issue. (about the date your mail chopped off really)

Hello Matt, thank you for responding.

That would be the 10th of May 2016, I'm in the UK, I hoped that I had been specific enough with October still being some 5 months away but I'll take extra care in the future.

I had noted your suggestion to others who had a similar problem but was hoping there was a repair that did not result in the loss of my e-mails.

This issue arose just after the installation of a Thunderbird update and, bearing in mind that I am not a programmer or any sort of computer expert, I suspect that there was a problem re-populating the inbox during the updating process. AVG records no inbox issues on or around the 10th of May.

To give you an example of what has happened I have copied and pasted below the text from an e-mail received from BTMobile (British Telecom); the first few lines are from a spammer and the last few are from a message from v12s.com.

When clicked some of the e-mails do not respond while others will contain reams of what I will probably incorrectly describe as un-formatted text, as in the example above, containing extracts from many different senders. I suspect that all of the e-mails' contents are still there, apart from the attachments of which I can find no trace, but scattered far and wide amongst the wrong senders.

I hope that that explanation helps you understand what the actual problem is and it happened on or about the 10th of May. All e-mails marked as being received from the 12th of May to date are behaving as normal.

If there is no way I can restore the actual e-mails to their former glory can you think of a way that I can turn that gobbledygook in to more legible text to make it easier to read the actual e-mail messages, albeit that they are randomly spread amongst several different headers? As you can see I am able to copy and paste and even e-mail it to myself.

If it's relevant I'm running the latest version of Thunderbird on Windows 7.

Best regards,

Bill.

That there is anything displayed is a very good sign. A repair may make mail visible.

What you, and I think most folk are not aware of is there are two files for mail. One that actually has mail, and another that acts as an index to populare the user interface. All it is is a list of mails and who send them when.

The repair reads the real mail fole and rebuilds the index. So there is no "repair that did not result in the loss of my e-mails." as repair cn not actually loose anything. All it can do it display to the user (you) want the real state of their mail data is (missing)

Having rubbish displayed indicates the index is simply off sync and looking in the wrong place to find the email. Having nothing displayed usually means the mail is gone and the index is pointing to thin air. If you follow that distinction.

Well, I tried your suggestion of repairing the Inbox folder and promptly lost all of the e-mails listed prior to the 12th of May, i.e. from the 10th back. Fortunately I had the foresight to copy the Mail folder from within the App Data folder before doing so, so was able to resurrect the previous setup which does at least show something. I think that we can safely say that that particular fix does not work for this problem.

I think we can safely say something has deleted your mail. Your resurrected "something" is a ghost. and the "fix" work a treat. You are just not prepared to accept that the result is not to your liking.

You are welcome to open your mail file (Inbox is called inbox) in notepad and see if you can actually find anything in the file before the date you mention. very rarely mail files do get corrupted. but if there is nothing there you are kidding yourself if you thing you are going to get your mail back from Thunderbird.
