I have today tried to log-on to my HSBC On-line Banking & I have experienced their new, upgraded interface however I couldn't access my accounts and when I spoke to HSBC they basically advised me to NOT use Firefox and use some other browser including that piece of rubbish IE!

Hi AndyNason, I don't have an account with HSBC, so I'll start with a question and some general advice to rule out common problems with changed websites.

Is the page just broken/dysfunctional or are there specific error messages you can relay to us?

General advice (steps below):

(1) Flushing cached files that Firefox might not have freshened (2) Clearing the site's cookies in case they include inconsistent/obsolete information (3) Checking whether content is blocked by Tracking Protection (4) Testing with extensions disabled in case the site now uses a server that is blocked/filtered

Note: If you ever see secure connection failure messages, that also could be a factor because if the failure is with a separate server used by a site, you don't get a warning page, just a silent failure.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the failing site (could be hsbc.com or a different domain), try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

(3) In Private Windows, Firefox's Tracking Protection feature blocks certain content. This article describes how to spot it (shield icon appears toward the left end of the address bar) and make exceptions: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

(4) In Firefox's Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Hi jscher2000, Thank you for such a quick response. I cleared the Cache and then re-started in Safe Mode - that worked, what I haven't got time for now is to try in normal mode as I need to get out of the office but I will have a go tomorrow. Thank you very much for your help - I will be in touch Andy
