I am having a problem where none of the favicons for the bookmarks in my Bookmarks Toolbar are displaying.

When I go to the Bookmarks menu, and scroll down the to Bookmarks Toolbar folder, all the favicons display within the folder. But in the physical Bookmarks Toolbar, only the text appears (see attached image).

How can I get the favicons to display next to the text for each bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar?

Have you ever created or edited a userChrome.css file? That a way to modify Firefox's user interface that is applied in normal mode but skipped in Safe Mode. To look for it:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button. This should launch a new window listing the contents of your profile folder in Finder.

If there is not a chrome folder, then you're done. If there is a chrome folder, double-click into that and look for a file named userChrome.css and if you find that, you can open it in a text editor and see whether it has anything relating to toolbars or the PersonalBar.

Hi gordon_k, can you try attaching the image again, to a reply:

Hmm, usually if Firefox can't find a site icon it still preserves the space. Do you use any add-ons or custom style rules that might be affecting the toolbar area?

Well now I'm really confused.

You're definitely onto something - when I start in safe mode the icons are back. But when I disable all my extensions and plug-ins and restart FF in normal mode, the icons are gone again. I'm just using the Default theme, so I can't think what else it could be. Any ideas?

Well, this is slightly embarrassing...

Looks like I've written myself a little script specifically to zap the toolbar icons, forgotten about it, then later noticed indignantly they were gone!

( When I trash the script, the items are too long for the toolbar and go to overspill )

Turns out a little knowledge is a dangerous thing - when combined with scatterbrain.

Thanks for yr patience and insight.  : )

Just posting to cross reference

Seems others may be affected by a similar issue, of as yet unknown origin.

Forum note This solved thread will survive the rollforward to Lithium - the new thread will not. I guess this post will then also disappear - I could edit an earlier post of this thread in Lithium. Just thinking of how to preserve any solution for post roll-forward.
