A pane after the list of email pane and before the message content pane has appeared that has its own slider bar and contains message thread information. How can I eliminate this space hog so I just have 2 panes, one with the list of emails and one with the message?

I've never seen such a pane before, but then I don't care to see message threads or the reading pane.

Please provide a screenshot of your Thunderbird window, so I can see what you are talking about. How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

I finally discovered the problem. ALL was checked under View/Headers. Checking NORMAL corrected the problem and removed the thread pane from the center.

This add-on will further reduce the space taken by the header panel. (to 1 line) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/compactheader/
