I have Firefox 54.0 64-bit installed on Windows 10 64-bit Version 1703 (Build 15063.413). Firefox is set as the default web browser both in Default Programs in Control Panel and in Default apps in the System settings. Nonetheless, whenever I restart my PC or restart Firefox the system once again asks me whether I want Firefox to be my default browser. Can you help? Thanks.

Your not the first  ;-)

This might be a Windows problem if the system will not remember.

As to Firefox; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

The issue turned out to have been caused by my having inadvertently installed two different versions of Firefox (32-bit and 64-bit). Removing both and reinstalling the latter version has solved the problem.
