For ad-hoc colours, you can use the font colour tool in the formatting bar.

To see this toolbar, you need to…

  • compose using HTML (see Account Settings|Composition & Addressing).
  • have the Formatting Toolbar enabled in the Composition window (see View|Toolbars in the Composition window's menu).

The foreground (font) and background colours are chosen using the toolbar button with the two overlapping coloured rectangles.

To set a default colour, try Tools|Options|Composition|General and click the button labelled "Text colour".

So sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about! How do I get to HTML? Ever since Windows 10 came in, I cannot get to grips with my computer. I have been using a computer for over 27 years, am now 78 years old myself, have done all kinds of things with my old programs, but this new stuff is just beyond me. Thanks for trying to help, but I think I need more direct help than online. I need a human being to help me with my machine!!!

I have the NEW general problem in composition that my use of the font color buttons mentioned simply has no effect. Also in my HTML signature file: the specified font color is ignored there too.
