the 'join or Buy xfinity' box appears upon opening at randomly during the day. I have, and never will, use it. I have searched and deleted all cookies I don't recognize and don't want. Nothing has erased this annoying bug. I have a Mac desktop with El Capitan OS, and Safari 10.11.2 and Firefox 56 . Also the beachball appears frequently at the same time.

Are you a xfinity customer ? There is possibly a setting in Mac to stop this (maybe) or Check in your ADD/Remove Programs for anything to do with them that is not needed and uninstall. Clear your Cache and your Temp Folders and Need a Malware Adware Scan. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware then follow guidelines for what ever site you post in. Example below : https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/ Post in 1 forum only and wait if something is found and need help.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Since you say that you never have and never will use Xfinity - would you check the settings here :

3-bar menu (or 'Tools') => Options => Privacy & Security and scroll down to 'Permissions'

Also you could consider to install uBlock Origin : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

As for the 'beachball' - would you take a look at this article, please :
