On Windows 7, each Firefox window should have the usual minimize, max/restore, and close buttons on the upper right corner. Are those missing on yours? There isn't a feature to minimize an individual tab within a window.
You can open the Options/Preferences page in a (possibly pinned) tab and go to this tab if you want to check the Password Manager.
I am trying to minimize a a page but still stay in firefox--so as to retrieve something from another site or e-mail-then return. If I use the existing windows minimizer it takes me out of firefox.

You could just open that other site or email in a new tab, collect whatever it is you need from there, and then return to the tab you were on ......
Do you want to do something different in Firefox that would require to open a page in a tab or do you want to make space on the desktop for another application?
I'm a little slow--so I probably need a tutorial or something visual as I don't know where these avenues are located. I really like firefox and use it regularly--just need to find the features I regularly used on explorer. I use the firefox icon on the bottom tool bar to enter firefox. So when I finish with a site it goes back to icon on the toolbar. I wish it would go back to home page of firefox.
