I've used the Firefox Bookmark Dupes several times & 100+ bookmarks keep returning, both in the drop down 'bookmarks' menu & in folders, usually in folders that have had recent activity. Hours have been spent trying to fix this. Also tried using 'show all 'bookmarks' and deleting individual bookmarks that way to no avail!

Have you set up Firefox Sync? Just wondering if that could explain how bookmarks you deleted get restored, since normally, what you delete is not automatically restored.

Are you able to add new bookmarks? If you can't add or delete bookmarks, we would assume there has been damage to the Places database. This article describes approaches to that: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message.

It is possible that Firefox tries to restore an infected bookmarks backup that has these duplicate bookmarks.

You can check this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

You can check if there are places.sqlite.corrupt files in the profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
