I recently updated the newest Firefox version, at least I think so. I watched the Video about creating and accessing bookmarks. Before the latest version I created many folders and placed websites of many non-profit organizations and other arts resources. Now, when I click the star the follow occurs: Star turns blue and moves to clip board? icon. First option: View bookmark side bar; Second: Show All Bookmarks; Third: View Pocket List (I don't use Pocket); Forth: Bookmarks Toolbar; Fifth: Other Bookmarks; Sixth: Show all Bookmarks. These are fewer options than listed on the Firefox bookmarks video. When I click: Show all Bookmarks a grey and white empty box appears with the the top title Library. When I click Show All Bookmarks, nothing occurs. What's also odd is that when I bring up a website like nypl.org the star turns blue. But I can't find that bookmark, only listed, without a name, of 157

Hi ghendren, you might not have updated recently...

The Question Details, More System Details next to your question indicates Firefox 48.0.2, which was released on August 24, 2016, so it is no longer supported.

The current version (new today) is 64.0 and has the new toolbar design introduced in Firefox 57. In Firefox 57+, the clipboard icon is gone, and the star is moved into the address bar at the right end (similar to Firefox 4-28). There is a new Bookmarks Menu button you can add to the toolbar (looks like ). Otherwise, you can use the Bookmarks menu on the top menu bar.

Is your built-in updater broken? Try this way, there should be a button:

(menu bar) Firefox > About Firefox

And finally, look in Other Bookmarks for new bookmarks you add using the star icon. It should be one of the "fly-out" menus you can access from the drop-down menu.

If there is a problem with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the Disk Image file to the desktop Firefox 64.0:

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Ah. Stopped in my tracks. When I pulled up the Firefox page the message read that my systems was critically out of date. When I clicked download I received the message:

Can't seem to connect. What now?

Hi Greg, you might need to install manually using the steps in cor-el's reply. Use Safari to do the download if necessary.
