My Win10 laptop with Firefox v. 84.0.1 (64-bit) recently stopped displaying radar images on both Accuweather.com and Weather.com. It will display the background map image but fails to display the radar overlay image of precipitation, clouds, etc. I suspected at first that perhaps that might be caused by AdBlock Plus or other security/privacy software to block pop-ups; but after whitelisting both sites, examining potential options on my Firefox browser, clearing browser history, and reinstalling Firefox, I'm still unable to display radar images on either weather URL.

The failure to display radar overlays is the only symptom I've noticed. I have no difficulty displaying radar images on my cellphone or using Edge on the laptop, so it would seem the problem is somewhere in the laptop or Firefox software; but the problem on the laptop began with no apparent connection to any updates of software, Firefox, or anti-malware, which sometimes cause unexpected problems. I'm totally baffled! Do you have any suggestions for elsewhere to look?

Can you post screenshots of the issue in Firefox and another one from another browser?

There's no useful screenshots to be made. They would both show the background image of the map. The 'correct' version would also show the interactive (moving) overlay image of the radar of precipitation; but the 'incorrect' version would not show the radar image of the precipitation, just the background map image.

If you're unfamiliar with the interactive radar display, go to accuweather.com for any location and select RADAR to see the interactive radar display. Then imagine it without any radar image showing on the map.

You can check the Web Console for WebGL and canvas related messages.

You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Okay, this page works for me. see screenshot Did you try in safe mode?

OK, you displayed the background map image but there is no radar image overlay displayed in the screenshot you sent. To see radar image, it may be necessary to go to larger or different area where precipitation exists at the time.

Yes, I've tried SAFE mode. Deleted cookies, rechecked all blocking parameters. Still hasn't solved the problem.

I didn't hit play, but here is another shot.

It works regardless of the size.

Is this the static radar image or the moving (interactive) image you've sent? I have no difficulty getting the static image; but the interactive image has recently stopped displaying. I've been using the URL for Accuweather.com and Weather.com for weather info and looking at their interactive radar images for many years; but suddenly the interactive display is not appearing on this machine. Only a blank map background when I go to the interactive radar page.

The correct interactive radar appears properly on my backup laptop and on my cellphone and tablet. The correct interactive radar appears on my 'problem' laptop if I use MS Edge rather than Firefox. So it seems that the problem is probably in Firefox OR somewhere in my security/privacy settings; but I've unblocked everything I can find relative to Firefox, pop-ups, etc. I've deleted cookies, cache, history, etc. But still haven't found the solution to restoring interactive radar on Accuweather.com and Weather.com. I can see static radar but not interactive (moving) radar image.

Thanks for your efforts to assist but I don't seem to be any closer to fixing the problem.

I go to the interactive map, hit play, and then it works... Can you do the same? Do you see the play button at the bottom? Post a screenshot showing your entire browser.
