Myriad of Problems (since last update?)
Thunderbird has become dysfunctional, I think since the last update. I’ve been using Thunderbird for many years, with an Earthlink account, set to POP3 server. Currently, I am using it on my iMac with Mojave 10.14.6. The first symptom that I encountered was being unable to Send emails. Then, I discovered that I couldn’t download emails. Later, to my surprise, it downloaded the latest emails from Earthlink, but all of that email was still on the Earthlink server.
I changed the Earthlink password because I was afraid it was defaulting to IMAP, which I don’t want. But I haven't been able to enter the new password in Thunderbird. I can hardly do anything without getting the spinning ball, and the application freezing. I have to Force Quit to try again, but the same thing happens. Furthermore, I have discovered that the Earthlink account is duplicated under Account Settings. I have absolutely no clue how that happened!
Loading the program and selecting About Thunderbird brings up nothing, so I can’t tell you the version I am using. The Earthlink account is not my only account in Thunderbird. If I have to reinstall the application, would I have to set up all of those accounts all over again?
I have archived emails going back to 1998, when I used Netscape. Most under Local, but some in the Earthlink account that I was using for downloading emails. Yes, my Thunderbird library (libraries?) is/are backed up. But I’m afraid to delete things from within Thunderbird.

"I have deleted two duplicates of the trouble shooting information, it is long enough to scroll through once.
That looks as if you have four accounts with Earthlink, one with ATT and one with Google. Is that correct?
Are the ATT and Google accounts working correctly?

I really only have one Earthlink account, and at least four email addresses. (The EarthLink account offers more than one email address.) But apparently, I've set up each of the four email addresses as if it is a separate account in Thunderbird? Actually, only one of accounts is important, because email to the other three addresses are forwarded to one primary email address. If it helps, I would rather delete those three superfluous accounts in Thunderbird than try to fix them.
I have to check and get back on whether the ATT and Google accounts are working correctly. I don't actually use Thunderbird for those two accounts. Emails to those addresses are forwarded to my primary Earthlink email address as well.
I have to ask, do you use web mail all the time to need forwarding? Thunderbird is more than capable of aggregating mail from multiple accounts into a single whole, and managing the replies from the correct one if needed.
Note an email address is an account in Thunderbird. Regardless of what your provider might call it.
I do, in fact, use Earthlink Web Mail all the time from multiple devices. I clean things up (get rid of SPAM, etc.) as much as possible while my email is still on the Earthlink server, through filtering, as well as manually to some extent. Ultimately, I download and archive emails in Thunderbird on local storage, which is why I have it set to POP3.
I have made absolutely no progress solving this problem. Here are steps that I have taken repeatedly, because I don’t know what else to do:
Launching Thunderbird, I’ll click Work Online. Thunderbird asks: Enter your password for [my att.net email address].
I don’t know why it asks for the AT&T password, and not passwords for other accounts. Could it be due to unsent emails from that account?
I’ll enter my current AT&T password. After a little white, I’ll receive the message: Error with account [my att.net email address]. Sending of password for user [my att.net email address] did not succeed.
Could this be because I have Earthlink, not AT&T, set as the Default Outgoing Server? Remember that I changed my primary Earthlink email account because I was afraid it was defaulting to iMAP. It was an emergency stop gap measure. I still haven’t provided Thunderbird with the current Earthlink password.
Also, remember that my primary Earthlink email account is duplicated, and I don’t know how that happened. Next, I’ll select one of them, and receive the following message: Account Wizard. An account with this name already exsits. Please enter a different account name.
At this point, trying to do anything else leads to the spinning ball. I have to Force Quit.
