I am moving to a new PC. I managed to transfer my bookmarks by exporting them to IE, then to a memory stick, then to the new PC and so on to the new Firefox where they appear as "from IE". They have since moved on from the list brought over. I have looked for this updated list but cannot find it. I have found place.sqlite but it will not open - should it hold the "from IE" list? Please can you tell me if there is any way of absorbing this "from" list into Firefox and how can I open place.sqlite to check that it is working .

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

You can't open places.sqlite. You can copy places.sqlite to a Firefox Profile Folder and see the bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager. Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks

Thankyou. 1. Is the best way to do this to use the profile manager to create a new profile to work with - so that I do nor muck up my existing one? 2. I sthere any way of integrating my "from IE" list of bookmarks into Firefox?

If you have a HTML backup of the updated IE favorites then you can import that file in Firefox. Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML : "From File"

You can use this extension to remove duplicates. CheckPlaces: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/10897

Thankyou again. I have only used IE as a vehicle to get my bookmarks list from my old PC to my new one and although this worked it was annoying as IE organises its favourites in a different way to my bookmarks and it took a long time to reorganise them. That long list now resides in my new Firefox under the heading "from IE". Having a suspicious nature I cannot convince myself that places.sqlite is certain to contain this "from IE" list which is why I am anxious to test it. Is my idea of creating a new profile in which to do this a bad one?

No, creating a new profile to test something is never a bad idea.

If you previously had a "From IE" folder in the bookmarks then that folder should have been saved in places.sqlite and appear if you place that file in a Firefox profile folder. Restoring a JSON backup should also have those IE favorites.

If you have an HTML backup of the IE favorites then you can open that file in Firefox (File > Open File) to see all links.

Thankyou Cor-el. I have created a new "test1" profile and copied places.sqlite into it, that bit worked just fine. However the bookmarks list was about five weeks old/ out of date - how can this be?
