When I down load something, I would like to know where the downloaded file is stored. If I've downloaded an application, I can click on it in the download drop-down that's part of Tools, but I would like to know where the file is stored on the hard drive.

Open the Options dialog and go to the General panel, it will show you there where you download files to.

An alternative is to open the downloads manager (select Downloads in the tools menu), right-click on a file that you have downloaded, and if the file has not been deleted you can select "Open containing folder" to go to where the file has been downloaded.
