I set up a g-mail account to be separate from thunderbird so I wouldn't get all those unsolicited e-mails in Thunderbird , but I still get all the g-mail messages sent to Thunderbird and waste a lot of time deleting all those un-wanted e-mails coming from my g-mail account.

Thunderbird is email client software. It is NOT an email account. It only downloads messages from email account that YOU add to the software. If you do not want Thunderbird to connect and download from your Gmail account remove that account info from Thunderbird.
