Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar.. Then Tools > Options > Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Poke around safe web sites and see if there is still a problem. Then restart.
Hardware acceleration was off already.
Hi travelerjjm, one of the other features of Firefox's Safe Mode is to disable the JavaScript compilers.
Am I reading the crash reports correctly that you're crashing about once per day? That may be a long time to run in Safe Mode with all your extensions disabled as a test. You could try disabling the JavaScript compilers in normal mode (exiting and starting Firefox up again might be needed, I'm not sure).
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste javas and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the following preferences to switch them from true to false:
- javascript.options.baselinejit.content
- javascript.options.ion.content
These similarly named preferences relate to Firefox's user interface and extensions ("chrome"). Not sure whether you need to disable the compilers for these:
- javascript.options.baselinejit.chrome
- javascript.options.ion.chrome
Turning off the Javascript compilation did not fix it, either.
Could you disable all extensions you can live without for 48 hours and see whether that makes a difference? You can open the Add-ons page using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions.
Please make sure to disable HTTPS-Everywhere as a number of users are having problems with that extension. You can observe the address bar and switch to HTTPS manually when desired.
