Everything slow on Win8.1 but not on Mac

A couple days ago my TBird on my Win8.1 machine slowed to a crawl. It takes forever to download emails, to load emails to read, to send emails to the Junk folder, etc. Sometimes I get an error message saying that a script isn't working and asking if I should stop it. I have updated and reinstalled TBird, but it doesn't help. I have restarted in safe mode, but it doesn't help. I have ported the profile over to my Mac, where I also have TBird installed, and everything works fine there. So this seems to be a Windows-specific problem. Is anyone else seeing this? Does anyone know what to do about it?

I am not sure where exactly it in in McAfee (it has been making Thunderbird slow and causing script errors for over a year. They release fix after fix) but there is an option (I think in real time shield) to scan documents and programs instead of everything. I have been told by those that had success with McAfee support that you change that an everything returns to normal

about 90% or more of these script and slowness issues turn out to be related to anti virus program or other security software.

Reboot the windows machine in safe mode with networking and see if the slowness persists.

Yes, in safe mode everything speeds up to normal. But my McAfee anti-spam is turned off and the Add-On is disabled. What more can I do?

Also I get the following error message when trying to junk an email: "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/msgHdrViewOverlay.js:768"

...and this slightly different one sometimes when downloading email: "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:503

What am I missing here?

Thanks, Ted

I had already selected the option to scan only documents and programs. Didn't help by itself. But I went down to the bottom of SETTINGS in Real Time Scanning and selected "Minimize the effect on my PC's speed ..." rather than "Strike a balance between the scan thoroughness..." (which had previously been selected). and that seems to have done the job. At least on initial testing everything is now speeded up back to normal.

Thanks, Ted
