I always close all open tabs before closing Thunderbird. Frequently, but not always, when I open Thunderbird, several tabs of previously sent (or received) messages open by themselves, Can I fix this by changing some options or settings? If so, which one(s)? Thanks.

I always close all open tabs before closing Thunderbird.

Then use File (Alt-F) - Quit to close Thunderbird.
