My edefault email client is thunderbird (52.6.0) and my OS Win 7 SP1 64 pro. When I click on a mailto link with firefox quantum (58.0.2), there's a dialog box that says "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window". That's a bit annoying because I don't remember that it was doing that before the quantum update. (or maybe I've forgotten ?) Anyway, if I try the same thing with a chrome browser (vivaldi), the mailto link is working well and it opens the thunderbird composition window, even if "it is already running" ;)

So, I don't know if the problem is related to firefox only, or firefox + thunderbird, but the thing is, it's working perfectly with chrome + thunderbird...

Do you have any idea how to solve that ? Thanks !

(I've already tried to point at the thunderbird.exe in the app configuration for mailto links in firefox, just in case it would solve this, but it have not.)

Check the target field in the Thunderbird desktop shortcuts and make sure you do not start Thunderbird with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables). If you have a MOZ_NO_REMOTE environment variable then remove this variable and do not change its value to 0 because that doesn't work (only a check whether the variable exists is done).

No variables like that, and no switch in the shortcut. As stated before, thunderbird is working absolutely fine if the mailto link is clicked in chrome. The problem happens when I'm using firefox, so maybe this is related to firefox, and not thunderbird.

Please : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 58.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Are you using the same profile folder for Firefox and Thunderbird?

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
