Raw query for Saved Search folders
Search folders are currently limited by not being able to include logical OR's within a rule. This could be solved by either allowing rules to include multiple criteria, or simply allowing an advanced function for entering query language similar to the option in Outlook whereby criteria can be grouped in parentheses and include operators such as '||' or '&&', etc.

Are you referring to the Quick Filter Bar? To search with multiple criteria and 'Match all of the following' or 'Match any of the following', use Edit/Find/Search Messages (Ctrl+Shift+F). The dialog for saved searches is similar.
Another option is the Expression Search add-on.
Thank you very much for taking a moment to read and respond. I am specifically interested in creating Saved Search Folders whereby the current options are not advanced enough. The easiest thing for Mozilla Dev's to do here would be to simply provide an option to create a rule based on a query we can write ourselves. For instance, in Outlook I have a search folder configured to match "all" for the following two rules: (com_microsoft_outlook_unread = 1 || com_microsoft_outlook_flagged = 1) (kMDItemRecipients != value1@domain1.com && kMDItemRecipients != value2@domain2.com)
I'm not familiar with Outlook's search syntax, but I guessed a similar saved search in TB would look something like the attached picture. The 'testing ' address book contains contacts like valueX@domainX.com. You obviously can't mix AND and OR rules in this case, but I believe you can with the cited add-on and also with TotalQuickFilter.
The trouble with the saved search options in the picture is that if you chose to "match all", you are locked into criteria with all AND's, and if you select "match any" you are forced into all OR's. Yes, what I am after is a method for mixing these AND's and OR's such as: Show me the results where either ((criteria1 AND criteria2) OR (criteria3 AND criteria4)) is true.
I already use expression search (have done so for a long time) and greatly appreciate the utility of the extension. What I am after though is a means of saving similar queries to a persistant view.
I will have a look at TotalQuickFilter, but I somehow get the impression it doesn't allow for saving a persistant view either...

Perhaps you mistake a support forum for a bug tracker or an enhancement request. For Thunderbird Bugzilla is used for both.
Thank you again. I had actually tried going there first and only wound up here because I was apparently having DNS issues the failed to resolve the site at that time. I've since sorted that and will definitely be filing there now. Kindest regards, Steven
