PDF Open settings - can we check them on a web page?

Is there a way to check the settings on a page in firefox so we can inform our users if their PDF settings are changed?

We have set the PDF option to 'always ask' - but this (as everyone knows) keeps changing. Multiple posts outline that they change when a new version is installed.

When this happens, and a PDF is downloaded instead of being prompted with the pop-up, our users call requesting support. this would be nice if we had a couple users, but when you have hundreds, it causes support issues.

If there were a way to check the setting on the page, and inform the user that the setting is not correct, it would be helpful.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks,

E.

@donthavecow - i saw that post, thanks.

I'm trying to inform my users on a web page if the settings are not "Always Ask".

Looking for a way to get information on the settings in the browser when a webpage loads.

Might not be possible - i'm just asking.

I will try again to describe what I'm trying to do:

The users are computer challenged. We have setup the application so that when they run reports, it allows them to get a PDF version of the report. They do this by clicking on a PDF button.

This button generates a PDF and sends it to the browser - we have no control over this function - it's built into the software we use.

If the browser has 'download' as the option for PDFs, it is downloaded. If the browser has "Always Ask" as the option for PDFs, the browser pops-up the message box, asking the user to view or save As the file.

Since FireFox releases keep resetting this option, each time it happens we get numerous calls - "The report didn't pop up - the reports are broken"

What I want to know - Is there a way for us to check the PDF setting in firefox on a webpage (javascript?), that would allow us to tell the user when they login:

"Your PDF settings are no longer set to "Always Ask". Please click here for instructions on how to change your browser setting."

This would stop users from calling to report the pdf generation is no longer working

You may not be able to get an answer here. I have noted links to source documents.

The settings are in a file named handlers.json in a user's profile. I don't know whether there is any way for you to read it. Would it not be simpler to provide general instructions for Firefox users to check their settings?

I will post again to save time. Please remove the blank space in one of the links below.
