files from email are shown as downloaded; but then cannot be opened or found; e.g. files for Continuing Medical Education from the medical school show to be downloaded, but then cannot be opened. These were opened fine in the past.

Downloaded files disappear:

If they were downloaded by Firefox you would see a download window come up then when the download finishes that download window disappears. If the download finishes in a few seconds the download window never appears.

To bring back the download window use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+J".

To make is so the download window does not disappear so you have behavior up though at least Firefox 3.6.* then change option(uncheck the close) in

  • Tools > Options > General >
    Downloads:
[x] Show the Downloads window when downloading a file
[_] Close it when all downloads are finished

To see where the file was downloaded to right-click on the file in the downloads window, The downloads window is a log of where the file was saved to, it does not mean the file is still there if you look at a later time.

There is an option to save files to a specific folder below tha, and to always ask where to save files.
