I downloaded the update to my desktop and can open it, but I cannot move the icon to Applications. Each time I do, I get the error message: The item “Firefox.app” can’t be replaced because it’s invisible.

It's currently saved in Documents. The icon remains on the Dock.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

cor-el,

Thank you very much for your help. I did as you suggested, but came up with the same result. What I did next seems to have solved the problem, though. I erased the new download and restored a previous version of Firefox from Time Machine. When I opened it, it downloaded the updated version within the program (no separate download), and that seems to have taken care of the matter.

Thanks again.
