I found an answer to this over on superuser: http://superuser.com/questions/30402/how-can-i-disable-the-file-protocol-in-firefox
Those articles suggest to modify files in the Firefox program folder and such changes are no longer easy to perform because the files have been moved to the omni.ja(r) archive.
Maybe it is possible to run Firefox in a sandbox environment to prevent access to the file system.
