Hello. I want to move multiple bookmarks which are currently not in folders (below all of the folders in the bookmark menu) to different folders. From what I've read the way to do this is through "show all bookmarks". When I select "show all bookmarks" I only see the bookmark folders I have and not the "loose" ones outside of folders. How do I see these bookmarks? Thanks.

Running 14.0.1 on XP.

By default the topmost folders are

  • Bookmarks Toolbar - these will show on the bookmarks toolbar when you display it
  • Bookmarks Menu
  • Unsorted Bookmarks

You may create further subfolders within any of those, and add separators. Bookmarks may be dragged and dropped or coped between folders. The arrowhead alongside the folder name in the sidebar, menu or library allows you to expand the folder to see the content.

Hi John. I don't understand your answer. When I open the show all bookmarks I don't see the bookmarks that aren't in folders. I don't see them at all, not even in unsorted bookmarks. How can I see them? Thanks.

Show All Bookmarks opens the Library window, which has a left and right-hand pane. Click the Bookmarks Menu folder in the left-pane to see the contents of that folder in the right-hand pane. All your "loose" bookmarks should appear in the right pane, along with the folders in that "main" folder.

I have Firefox 15.0.1 with windows xp pro with all updates as of 9/28/12. I do have the bookmarks menu and I can see and use my bookmarks. So i know they are there. but when I do "show all bookmarks" the window shows up but nothing is the any of the panes. nothing in the left pane or right pane. and the bottom pane says "select an item to view and edit its properties". but when I click inside the left pane it change to No items.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension:

Hi, I have that same problem as realmikey. Unfortunatelly addon places-maintenance dosen't repair the Firefox. The bookmarks and history exist but it isn't displayed in Menager and in left "bookmark card". Resoult addon work:

  • > Reindex

You could try the other solutions mentioned above by cor-el BUT note that destroys your history. I would strongly suggest that you back up your profile first of all. (At the very least make a copy of the file places.sqlite.)

Have you anything vital in your History ? or do you often bookmark the important sites. (Unfortunately Firefox itself makes no attempt to back up History). I do not suppose you have already made any profile backups ? (or maybe have equivalent files on another device by use of sync)

No one else in the thread has come back with answers as to what solves the invisible bookmarks problem. What you could try is

  1. copying the places file somewhere safe, outside firefox paths - say the desktop - and then renaming the original. (belts & braces)
  2. run Firefox, it will regenerate a near enough empty places.sqlite

If

  • you are now able to see content ( just default/empty folders ) it is probably likely the problem is with places.sqlite corruption.
  • otherwise if you continue to see no content the problem is elsewhere
    • try the original file (rename them) and run in safe mode, with only the standard theme and no plugins enabled

Interesting extension, I will bookmark that one. Pity it does not also import history.
