Hi,

I had to completely back up my computer and reset it to factory settings. Before I did so, I used Firefox Sync and made an account so that I would not have to reinstall everything manually. Now I do not know how to get the information back on to my computer.

I do not have any other devices that I have synced the information to. I just want to download the information back on to my very same computer. How can I do this?

You need your:

  1. username for your Sync account
  2. password
  3. Sync Key (aka Recovery Key)

Then you use Add a Device and use I don't have the device with me to setup Sync to that "reset" computer.

BTW, Firefox sync is NOT a backup service, it's for synchronizing 2 or more devices. Using it as a backup service is not supported and will get you in trouble with lost information down the road.

I don't understand how to get my recovery key.

On my original computer I pressed 'pair a device' and entered the displayed key onto another computer nearby.

I don't have the recovery key and I do not remember setting one up in the first place. When I press "I don't have that device" it generates me a new key but warns that it will delete all my data if I change the key, wtf?

The key was given to you when you originally created your sync account, did you write it down?

If you still have that other nearby computer you could use 'pair a device' with that, again. Or possibly get the Sync Key from that other computer.

I dont remember, neither have write down my old recovery key so accidentaly i restored it and it erased all my saved data!! Can i recover that data and my old recovery key??

If you have regenerated your sync key, no there is no way to get the data back. You can only get it back if you've saved your recovery key. This is why it is critically important you read the instructions when you set up your Firefox Sync account carefully.

Are you shitting me? I literally just synced my data 20 minutes ago prior to a format and now I can't access it because I don't have a key which it NEVER alerted me of or presented to me?

"Warning: This will erase all of your data stored on the server. New data will be secured by this key and then uploaded. Your other devices will stop syncing, unless you update them with the new Recovery Key."

Literally the dumbest system I've ever heard of. I knew I should have manually backed up. Figured OK, this is 2013, I can stop backing up bookmarks.htm like it's a fucking 1995. Nope. What a joke.

Sorry if I sound angry, but I am. This just probably cost me a few hours of my life.
