I have several bookmark folders. However, now, when I click to bookmark a page, only a few folders show up in the list. So, I cannot bookmark a page in the folder I want. (This seems to have started after your last update.) How can I go back to the previous edition? Or, can you fix this issue? Thank you.

That's not a problem with any "update" - it's been like that since Firefox THREE was released back in mid-2008. There's only room for five folders in that silly little window, until you click the arrow to show more.

This extension "fixes" that little window by allowing you the "drag" parts of that window down to show a greater array of folders. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-bookmark-here-2/

Hello,

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Either enter about:support in your address bar, or go to:

  • Help (or New Fx Menu > Help-29 ) > Troubleshooting Information

Beside Profile Folder, click the "Show Folder" button to access the location of the file. Make sure it isn't read only. You can also install the Places Maintenance extension to run maintenance on the file. Please read the following articles first as they provide helpful hints and instructions that may be relevant to you:

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
    • Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 and select Show All Bookmarks.
  2. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Also, your system details show that you are still using Firefox 32.0.3. Firefox 33 is out, you can update by going to:

  • Help (or New Fx Menu > Help-29 ) > About Firefox

Or download a fresh copy at:

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

I did not lose any bookmarks. What I lost was several bookmark FOLDERS. When I want to bookmark a page, may of the folders I had are now missing. That has happened after eah of the last 2 Firefox updates. Can you please help me now, and, can you please stop this from happening with future updates. Thank you.

That still sounds like an issue with the file that handles your bookmarks. Sorry, I realize I didn't put in a link for the Places Maintenance extension:

Can you try using it to see if it detects/fixes any problems? Let us know if it works for you.

I have installed the Places Maintenance extension. I do not see where I need to run it. I still have many folders for bookmarks missing.

I'm sorry that I don't know what do do next.

To use the extension, you need to go to your extensions page:

  • Either enter about:addons or go to Tools (or Menu New Fx Menu) > Add-ons
  • Go to the extensions tab
  • Click "Options" for the Places Maintenance extension
  • Under for the dropdown under Preset, select "All" and then "Execute"

I did what you instructed. That was easy to follow. But, it didn't change anything. I have 40 bookmark folders listed in my bookmark listings. But, when I want to bookmark a page, I only have 5 bookmark folders to choose from. The others are lost somewhere. Since this extension doesn't fix the situation, can I go back to the previous edition of Firefox? That worked perfectly. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate this.

If you are talking about the little downward facing blue arrow, when doing a bookmark, I only get to choose from 5 folders. Before your last update, I had 40 folders to choose from. I still have all of those folders in my Bookmark lists, but I can only chose from 5 of them, when I want to bookmark a page into a folder.

May I please just go back to the previous version of Firefox, which had no bookmark folder problem? That would solve this issue. How can I do this?

Thanks, Jim

This extension did not help at all. Are you saying that Firefox was designed to allow the user to only have 5 bookmark folders to choose from, when bookmarking a page? Am i understanding you correctly?

I can tell you that I did NOT have this occur until this latest update. So, obviously something is different that maybe you and others on your team don't know about. Am I the only person that has reported this issue?

I sincerely appreciate your help. Probably by now you are frustrated, and if so, I am sorry. If there is nothing you can do, I understand. That's OK. I just wish I could go back to an earlier version. Thank You.

Thanks, Phillip. I went back and restored my pc to an earlier date and then downloaded Firefox from an earlier version. It works great now, with no bookmark folders issue. But, I will again download the newest version and then do what you have told me to do. Hopefully, that will solve the issue. I will let you know. Jim

I now have Firefox 12.0 installed and the bookmark issue is fixed. Thank you for your wonderful and patient help. I don't know what changed, but it works great now.

You are the man!

Well, while I was using Firefox 12.0, where everything worked perfectly, I saw a popup that said I needed to update Firefox. So, I went to the Help tab, chose About Firefox, and the upgrade happened.

So, now I am again back to the same issue with not being able to chose between more than 5 folders. I DID NOT have that issue with 12.0. Can you help?

i may not fully understand the problem at hand, but here is a screencast with ff34: https://imgur.com/6YYVi5B

I know about making new Bookmark folders to put bookmarks into. That is why I now have about 40 of them. The problem is that I cannot see more than 5 of the 40 folders in the drop down menu, when I want to find my correct folder to put the bookmarked page into it. This defeats the purpose of the Bookmark folders, does it not? You say that this is not something new, but I didn't have this issue before Firefox 33 or 34. I already downloaded the extension you mentioned, that was to have corrected this, but it did not. If this has been a problem for so long, can it not be fixed in one of the new Firefox editions. It used to work great in the earlier editions of Firefox.
