I'd like to import my favorites from IE without any sorting at all - no bookmark sorting, no folder sorting, no bookmark within folder sorting, etc. The imported bookmarks icon seems to show them unsorted on the top level but sorted on lower levels, i.e. within folders. Am I missing something?

It will probably just grab all the bookmarks, and then pile them into a folder. If you have bookmarks in a folder, it will take the folder, but if they aren't in a folder. I'm not one of those bookmark savvy people, so I wouldn't be able to recall troubles such as these... The 'top level' bookmarks are bookmarks not in a folder correct?

If you use the import wizard ("Import Data from Another Browser") then Firefox scans the IE favorites that are stored as files and folder on the hard drive like other files are saved. If favorites in folders appear sorted then it is likely that they are already sorted on the hard drive.

Another option is to export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import this file in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":
