Firefox is currently only available as a 32bit program, but it will run fine on 64bit Windows 8 with the 32bit version of Java.

If you are having issues, I would uninstall whatever version of Java you have now and install a fresh version from here. You will want the Windows Online version. If you have trouble with that one (e.g. it gets stuck downloading) then you can try the Windows Offline version.

You do NOT want the Windows Offline (64-bit) version.

Let us know if that solves your problem.

Not to add more confusion, but... hardly any websites require the Java plugin (also known as the JRE). If you are getting an error referring to JavaScript, that is a kind of code that Firefox handles itself, without using the Java plugin.

Could you describe the error you are getting in more detail?

Also, just because there are so many scams going around involving IRS settlements, are you sure the payment site is legit?

After installing Java using Windows Online got the following message when verifying installation "We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser."

There is a preference that was recently added to Firefox that allows you to restrict plugin visibility. Sites still can check for plugins by name, but if this preference is set, test pages like mine will not be able to see the ones that are not on reported as part of the total available plugin collection. You might check whether that has been customized.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste enum and pause while the list is filtered

(3) By default, the plugins.enumerable_names preference is set to * meaning "all". If it has been customized to a particular list of plugins and Java is not on it, that could be the problem.

Oops, that reply assumed that Java(TM) Platform SE 8 U40 is now showing up on your Add-ons page and is set either to "Ask to Activate" or "Always Activate".

If it is not showing up on the Add-ons page, then there are some other things to check.

Confirm that Firefox is scanning the registry for plugins

Firefox finds the Java plugin from a registry entry. Some users have the scanning turned off for some reason. Here's how to check and fix that:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste scan and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If plugin.scan.plid.all is not set to its default value of true, double-click it to toggle it back to the default.

If you changed this setting, exit and restart Firefox to trigger another scan.

If you check the Add-ons page, Plugins section again, can you find Java there?

If Firefox is set to scan but still does not find Java and list it on the Add-ons page...

Remove Firefox's plugin registry file

Sometimes the pluginreg.dat file becomes corrupted. You can remove it and have Firefox re-scan for plugins.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
• Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button to launch a new Windows Explorer window showing your settings files.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

• "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
• File menu > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename pluginreg.dat to something like pluginreg.old

Start Firefox back up again. (If you want to restore your previous non-private session, use History > Restore Previous Session.)

When you return to the Add-ons page, is Java finally there?

If not...

Make sure Java is enabled in browsers

Find Java in the Windows Control panel. On Windows 7 I've got it here:

Control Panel > Programs > Java (32-bit)

On the Security tab, make sure there's a checkmark in the box at the top "Enable Java content in the browser"
