FF says I need to update media player, but then attempts to download a Windows (.exe) app to my Mac as a fix.

Firefox continues to advise me that the browser needs to be updated because the media player is out of date. However the "fix" is ineffective because the download sends a Windows application (.exe) to my Mac running OS 10.11. I had the same problem when the OS was 10.10. Needless to say, I can't run an .exe file on my Mac. The Mac responds with this statement: “You can’t open the application ‘MediaUpdate_3.0(1).exe’ because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X.”

The browser will continue to be useless until this is resolved because it's constantly being interrupted with the same message and inappropriate fix.

Firefox doesn't say that, but this is likely malware that targets Windows computers, but won't work on Mac. If you get this on specific web pages then ignore it. If it happens randomly then check your computer for malware.
