Each time I click on "write" to start writing a new email, the words "Plain Text" appear at the start of my message box and I have to delete them before I can compose the message. How can I get rid of them? Grateful for any advice please.

That's not normal Thunderbird behaviour.

Do you have a signature set up that might be responsible for this?

Hello Zenos. I've been away for a few days. Thanks for responding. Having thought about it a bit more I went to Tools> Stationery options because I recall the issue starting when I installed an HTML stationery option. [At that time I could not understand why web addresses or email addresses in my outgoing emails did not appear as hyperlinks. I've since seen a message from someone that Tbird formats them as hyperlinks when the message is sent]. Anyway, since my stationery installation, I saw 2 items listed - firstly "HTML syntax preview" and below it was "Without Stationery". As there was an option to "move up" I moved "Without Stationery" up into first position, and not only have the words "plain text" gone but I can now once more see the colour scheme I had originally chosen for my outgoing emails when I first set up Tbird.

I like Tbird but I find some of the setup arrangements confusing.
