Windows 10 update breaks all NT compatibility layers for Eudora 7.0.1.9
OK, folks: I've used Eudora since 1993, migrating it from Mac to NT in 1996 when Steve f*cked all the Mac users. Yes, I know it has its' "issues;" but it's storing MIME attachments in a separate "Eudora Attachments" folder has been a lifesaver, when a "silo" was corrupted by Kaspersky in 2003, causing a loss of 4 years of e-mail archives.
It looks like I'll need to "bite the bullet" with Thunderbird; but how do I: 1) Import My 80+ Eudora .MBX files into it? 2) Import my C:\EUDORA_ATTACHMENTS folder into it? 3) Assure that my MBX and attachments are NOT combined into some easily-corruptible "silo?"

If those are your requirements I suggest you move on. When you find another email client that stores attachments and the email as separate files, I will be all ears. Whilst I see no reason for it, you and the rest of your Eudora refugees place a great store on it. I would love to just give them what they want and be rid of the problem really.
Thunderbird stores mail in either EML or MBOX formats. Both of which include the whole email in the file. Not just a bit of it. There are add-ons that detach attachments, how well they work or how reliably they do their job I can not say.
What I do know is that if you do the right thing and disallow your anti virus from scanning your mail store and you do not allow it to mess with incoming mail then your level of data loss will be negligible. I do not recall ever having an issue with data loss on a POP mail account. I can not say can never happen because there are a lot of causes to file corruption. That is why I have backups. Because nothing is absolute.
You should run Eudora rescue over everything before you start. Eudora files are at best troublesome and at worst simple a collection of semi corrupt files. Then install Thunderbird say V5 to import from Eudora. I have no idea what will become of your attachments. but I think they just stay where they are and Thunderbird imports the mail sans attachments..

I did NOT come to this forum to told by some PFY control freak this. I have a damned good reason for storing MIME attachments separately from the e-mail text, and I plan on keeping it that way, as, among other things, I have patient records which I must store in a way to meet HIPAA and state licensing laws and regulations.
Once again, I'm running into a problem with a legacy app which no longer runs in a 32 bit NT compatibility layer. Does anyone on this support forum even know what that is, and how NT actually works? Does anyone have a solution to MY problem?
As you were advised, move on. Thunderbird is almost certainly not for you, as it does not have any native tools for storing attachments separately.
This is a Thunderbird help forum, and not a Eudora help forum. I doubt anyone here would be able or willing to address your issues with NT and 32-bit compatibility. Sorry.
Excuse me, but Qualcomm provided (donated) the Eudora source code which was renamed "Thunderbird;" And Yes, this is still SUPPOSED to be a Eudora support forum as well.
As I stated above, I have an EXPLICIT reason for storing MIME attachments separately. You're the second joker who has come along and NOT PROVIDED AN ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM.

The REAL question is, why was the Qualcomm Eudora source code, which created the separate mailboxes, changed by Mozilla to begin with? It worked very well, especially on NTFS partitions; but some enterprising (Mozilla?) joker changed it, breaking this valuable feature.

Perhaps if you had your facts right you would not be complaining so hard. I have no idea what Qualcomm did with the Eudora source code. But they did not open source it, or donate it to Mozilla. They made it clear that they would never be open sourcing the Eudora source code.
Eudora most certainly did not become Thunderbird and to the best of my knowledge there is not a single line of ex Eudora code in Thunderbird.
Thunderbird has it's roots in the Netscape suite. They open sourced their code and the Mozilla Foundation was created around that open source. The suite was later broken into a browser (Firefox) and a mail client (Thunderbird) and a splinter group continued the suite as an open source project (Sea Monkey).
Some years ago Qualcomm decided to get out of mail clients and started a somewhat abortive attempt to create Eudora OSE based on Thunderbird with the Penelope add-on to make it look more like Eudora. That aborted attempt has a single release around the time of Thunderbird version 3. No one was actually involved in Eudora OSE but a couple of qualcomm employees, when qualcomm ceased funding the project quite predictably died almost immediately. But do not believe me Wikipedia make a pretty good job of documenting the demise of Eudora. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudora_(email_client)
I did look a few years ago, but I can find no trace of the add-on source code contributed by Qualcomm. I thought a few of the features might have been worth copying. But it is as if the thing never existed really.
See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_OSE Note particularly the first paragraph.
So I reiterate.
If those are your requirement you are in the wrong place, looking at a product that will not fit your needs. I really have no interest in why you want to do what you say is a requirement. It is just a simple fact that Thunderbird does not do that.
But please do not trot out HIPPA as your excuse. Microsoft Outlook does not store attachments outside of the application in a folder and it is accepted for HIPPA compliance. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npeOb1rk8rU
