sometimes there is a similar entry with a childID 3 just reinstalled / updated adobe flash, very buggy behavior taking big disk, cpu and triggering crazy CPU fan action What is happening and how do I regain control of my machine.

Current Firefox releases have multi-process windows enabled. You may see three or more Firefox processes running.

  • one process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
  • one or more processes for content threads set via "Options/Preferences -> General -> Performance" (dom.ipc.processCount)
  • one process for the compositor thread (Windows)

You can look at "Multiprocess Windows" to see the current multi-process state.

  • "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" -> Application Basics: Multiprocess Windows

You can try to modify multi-process settings to see if this has effect.

  • set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4)
  • disable multi-process windows in Firefox

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Makes sense. What is the channel value and what are all those scary looking piped values about? 100+megs for an 'empty' page makes me feel insecure and not happy. I'm the sys admin, not the internet...
