How do I find the bookmarks that the new system has eliminated?
The old system used to have a bookmarks heading on the tool bar. No more. When I click on the Bookmarks symbol and the display bookmarks it only shows some of my old bookmarks. What up? And setting up this account smells like a commercial system to get into my information.

Hi, no it is a long road to get to this point to try and figure out your issue before it gets to a human.
It is not required to Register Firefox or make a account other than to here/Sync or to only if you want to for add-ons/Extensions There are other places also.
Please mouse to the top of the Browser and find a empty spot and Right Click to turn back on the Menu Bar and or the Bookmark Toolbar.
As for missing Bookmarks, they truly maybe missing and is why should always do this :

If the are missing please check your Desktop for a Folder called OldFirefoxProfile if found great. Please check here for a 2nd Profile the one with the oldest date if it is here:

You can add the "Bookmarks Menu" button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list to the Navigation Toolbar via these steps:
- click the bookshelf icon on the Navigation Toolbar or alternatively use the Library menu in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list
- click Bookmarks
- click "Bookmarking Tools", then click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
You can also drag the Bookmarks Menu button from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar

You can restore a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore
The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.
- bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4
