Re Web Push, does the sentence "Sites can use this feature to provide you with notifications or update data in the background" mean data can be updated in the background, or that Web Push is simply providing information about available updates?

Web Push use special server to send you messages even when you do not have tabs open to this specific website. This is one way and is only about showing a message in a pop-up.

There is a checkbox in Page Info for the current website:

  • Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions : Receive Notifications

You can check what websites you have allowed to send you messages via the Push API.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Permissions -> Notifications

You can see all registered service workers on these pages: about:serviceworkers and about:debugging#workers

This was the useful part: "... is only about showing a message in a pop-up". Therefore there is no background updating of "data" taking place. Thanks.
