Filled in email and password, google pop up asked for email and password and sent a confirmation request to my phone which I accepted but thunderbird still says authentication failure

Since you're on Linux, you may not have the version, 60.9.1 or 68.2.1, that fixes the Google OAuth issue. In the meantime, there is a workaround.

Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General/Config. editor, double-click general.useragent.compatMode.firefox to true.

Hi Thunderbird needs to use the same password that you use when logging in to your email online. You mention Google, so I am guessing that yours is Gmail? After you went through the password confirmation with Google, did you enter the same password in Thunderbird? Thunderbird might be 'remembering' a previous password that no longer matches your Gmail account, and needs the new password. Hope that helps, Agnes
