When I search for something, I sometimes can't see an instance of that search term, although Firestorm acts as if it's showing it. (How) can I make Firefox show the matches it finds more clearly?

You are referring to finding text in a page? You can yet change the highlight color.

type about:config into the address bar and go accept the warning paste into the top search bar this term:

     ui.textSelectBackgroundAttention

in the dialog box below, select the String radio button click the check mark now you can click the pencil icon to edit the color
