Fix frustrating bookmarks desktop workflow

Hi Firefoxers, I've recently returned to using Firefox after using Chrome, Vivaldi, and Brave for a long time. Most Firefox things are better than these, but I find the bookmarks handling in Firefox extremely frustrating in comparison.

When clicking the bookmark star, the edit bookmark box pops up. The location dropdown gives me a list of 7 recent folders where I can store the bookmark. If I click "Choose" a tiny little box opens up and, in this extremely cramped space, I have to scroll through hundreds of folders and all their expanded subfolders to find the one I want.

One way other browsers solve this problem is by letting the user right click directly on their bookmarks folders and select "Add bookmark here", which then automatically saves URL, page title etc to that folder. But in Firefox, this just opens up a blank "Add Bookmark" box that doesn't contain any info about the current page, meaning you have to manually enter all the details.

So I'm interested in any help advice about:

a) Increasing the number of recent folders in the location drop-down to make it a lot more than 7.

b) Increasing the size of the "Choose" box so I can see the list of hundreds of folders more comfortable.

c) Stopping all folders being automatically expanded in the "Choose" box.

d) Making Firefox auto-add the details from a current page when clicking "Add Bookmark".

Any help would be appreciated!

alexjross, does dragging and dropping the tab into either the bookmarks toolbar or side panel help?

The bookmarks side panel will at least give a large area for finding the desired folder before the dragging and dropping.

It might also be possible to drag a tab into the bookmarks menu, if either the menu bar or bookmarks menu are visible.

Hopefully some of these methods will create the bookmark in the desired location, with the page info pre-filled?

Unfortunately I do not know Linux commands, but on Windows you can open the bookmarks side panel by pressing ctrl+B, show the menu bar by pressing alt or F10, and open the bookmarks menu directly with alt+B.

Thanks TechHorse, I'll have to start doing that and build it into my muscle memory. That raises another question: is there a way to make the bookmarks sidepanel persist and always show between browser sessions?

djcrossan, normally Firefox opens with the side panels in whatever state they were in in the last window to close in the previous Firefox session.

So you could close all but one Firefox window, ensure that the bookmarks side panel is open in it, close that last window, and Firefox should from now on launch with the side panel open.

However, in recent versions of Firefox this will not work if you have told Firefox to clear certain types of data on exit.

But recently I saw that they were considering changing this so that Firefox will remember the side panel state independently of these clear history on exit settings. Not sure when or if this will be implemented.
