How do I find out if other firefox copies are running? The software update keeps saying it won't install because I need to check if other copies are running.

The update popped up, I clicked to install and it keeps popping up when I open Firefox that it cannot install because I need to check and see if other firefox copies are running. I do not know how to do that and why wouldn't firefox be able to tell if other copies are running and tell me how to delete them if that is what is necessary

right click on task bar, left click task manager, click processes. you should see "firefox.exe" if it is still running. if so, click/highlight it then click "End Process"

I followed your directions and it still pops up that it cannot install and continues to tell me to check if other copies of firefox are still running. what do I do now?

Do a clean (re-)install:

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
  • Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
