Cannot open any search engine sites but can open all other sites.

I cannot open the following web sites: google.ie google.com bing.com yahoo.com

But I can open other websites. I use Firefox 20.0 on Ubuntu 64bit.

Does updating firefox to 23.0 fix the problem, and or running firefox safe mode.

      thank you very much for your kind reply. Unfortunately it did not work.

1) I cannot update firefox as on the update tab of the Advanced Preferences only has a checkbox for "Automatically update" Search Engines (See attached photo).

2) I tried to run in safe mode and even reset Firefox but neither of those attempts worked.

When Firefox comes with (or installed by) a Linux distro, the Firefox program updates are done thru the the Package Manager for the distro - updates are not controlled from within Firefox Options and not are supplied by Mozilla.

When a Linux user downloads Firefox directly from Mozilla and installs Firefox them self, program updates would come from Mozilla and that option dialog would be more fully populated, as with Windows and Mac versions.
