Normal action when I delete an email - it usually goes to Trash folder. Now it stays in Inbox and I get the following error message:

The current operation 'Inbox' did not succeed. The mail server for this account folder responded: (TRYCREATE) Mailbox does not exist: Trash.

I checked Location dialog box under Account Settings of that folder and info for the Trash subfolder are the same for the other subfolders.

SDuffy,

Thanks for posting back that the Trash folder became operational after you restarted Thunderbird. I'll mark your reply as solving the problem.

Right click the account folder in the left pane and select subscribe. Is there a trash folder for the account not subscribed (names may differ, intent is king. Trash rubbish deleted all translate to trash in this case)?

Now under Tools (ALT+T) > account settings >server settings is the appropriate "trash" folder selected? (That would be the one on the subscribe list)

Hi Matt -

Thank you for your response to my dilemma.

To your 1st query - Trash is selected as subscribed.

In the account settings > server settings trash is selected as the folder to send a deleted emails to.

FYI - this trash folder has been working for a couple of years. Now it shows in the left hand pane as faint and in italics and T-Bird doesnt seem to recognize it.

Any further suggestions will be most welcome.

I did a google search on the error message and I found this mozillazine forum thread. Hope it helps:

cannot gain access to this link.

You mean the mozillazine link is not accessible? The forum may have been busy (happens routinely) but here is the post from that thread that resolved the problem:

Not sure if this will help but I've gotten that same sort of message when there is a problem with a particular piece of mail--I think the email might have been corrupted somehow. I've always been able to identify the specific email because I get that error message when I try to delete it--and any other email that follows it.
The only way I have found to resolve it is by going to the webmail interface for that email account, deleting the problematic email, go into the webmail interface's Trash box and deleting the email from there also. Then when I go back into Tbird, I'm able to delete any other email without a problem...
Sooo...I hope you have an alternate way to access your mail (webmail interface, another email software option, etc.) and I hope my suggestion will do the trick. If it does, then compacting regularly seems to avoid the problem...

I did not get a chance to try this.

I re-booted Thunderbird and the Trash bucket showed up and is operational.

Thank you for your input.
