Hi I downloaded "firefox-28.0.tar.bz2" and tar xvf the file created the folder "firefox". From what I understand, ~firefox/firefox should just bring up the program, but I got the following error. Did I miss anything? Thanks

lnx-davidw:/export/home/davidw/Desktop/firefox 1044=> ./firefox XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /export/home/davidw/Desktop/firefox/libxul.so: libgio-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Couldn't load XPCOM.

Before we start doing anything, I need to know what your operating system is. Is it Windows, Apple, or Linux, and which version? (I'm guessing Linux?)

If you're downloading for Windows, I know for a fact that you should be downloading an executable, not an archive. In the case of another operating system, I am not entirely sure, but please provide me with the information so I can help you. Thanks. (Are you downloading Firefox from the official website?)

cat /etc/redhat-release Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.8 (Tikanga)

Downloaded from firefox.com => Download

Again, the file I downloaded is "firefox-28.0.tar.bz2"

thanks

Go back to Mozilla.org and get the FULL installer for your system.

FredMcD, here is no Firefox installer for Linux as it comes as a .tar .bz2 and Awesomesauce the question was indeed about Firefox on Linux and not Windows or Mac OSX based on what was in post and also on right

kuoweiwang. I noticed in your useragent used to post with that you have 64-bit Linux as the version you downloaded was likely 32-bit.

Go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ and get Firefox in your language from the Linux 64-bit section. This all link is the Systems & Languages link below the green button on mozilla.org

According to this thread, you need RHEL 6 or higher.

Check if you have the required libraries.

thanks for the information about noting my redhat version. Hope firefox can do a better job putting out the OS version information or its somewhere and I missed it?

I only see 4 OSs on the download column Windows MacOSX Linux Linux 64-bit but apparently, the versions of those OSs also matter a lot, too. Plus redhat 5 isn't all that old.

You should always make sure to meet the System Requirements for a specific Firefox version.

You also need 32 bit versions of libraries if you install a 32 bit Firefox version (that is the default).

Thanks for the info. Where is the link above (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/28.0/system-requirements/) on the download page? I can't find it, and the download seems to start automatically when you go to the download page.

From user's perspective, I would expect to see this link somewhere around on the download page. And should not need to research/google and find the link, right? (fortunately, the link was given by you, otherwise, I will never know there is such thing) Maybe I am missing the link from the download page?

There is a link to the System Requirements on this download page:

Thats the problem, when I went to www.firefox.com, it takes me to

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?utm_source=firefox-com&utm_medium=referral

and as soon as I click the icon on the top right (Fireforx Free Download English (US)) it just downloads it automatically and I don't see the page http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html .

I just want to let you know how regular users experience this stuff. Let me know where I am missing. thanks

If you are using firefox.com instead of mozilla.org then click on the Download a fresh copy text link to get to the https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ page.

The Check the system requirements link is on top of https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ page.
