Why doesn't Firefox automatically recognize downloaded files?
When I rename a file before downloading from a Web site, mostly html format, Firefox -- unlike other browsers -- save it without an extension, which makes it impossible to search it later, or to open it. For it to save correctly I must add the extension, being it html or pdf. Is there a way to customize how Firefox saves files? Thanks

Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
Thanks. Followed your advice. Unfortunately the problem persists. Unless I add the extension manually, the downloaded file is unrecognizable.

If these are out of date, they should be removed, Check the others also.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
Sadly, none of these has helped. Still, I appreciate your taking the time to respond. I guess I'll continue to use Firefox for some purposes, but not for saving documents. Too bad.
Please go thru the steps of how you do downloads.
