I updated to the latest version of java a few days ago and now I can't watch any videos that use flash based players, like the ones on twitch.tv. I've tried reinstalling firefox and completely removing and reinstalling java but that didn't help.

I know mozilla feels java is vulnerable, and it probably is, but I'm going to watch the videos I want to watch regardless of what they think and making me switch browsers to do it is just going to annoy me, not save me from security risks.

Verify Java and Find Out-of-Date Versions {web link}

Version 8 Update 65 Release date October 20, 2015

@FredMcD Yeah, I tried that already. It works on Java's website but it doesn't seem to work anywhere else.

Do you actually use the Java plugin for anything on computer or in web browsers?. If not then you could uninstall Java. Note that Java is separate from JavaScript.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>) <Shift> A)

On the left side of the page, select Plugins. Make sure the ones you want to use are set to Ask or Allow.

Go to the web page. Once the page is loading, mouse to the address bar and Left click the icon. A window for displaying site information should come up. Select More Information. Now select Permissions. In the menu, Make sure the ones you want to use are set to Ask or Allow.

Do you get any error messages on the page or in the Web Console (Firefox menu button or Tools > Web Developer)?

There is no connection between the Flash plugin and the Java plugin and an update of Java shouldn't affect playing videos with the Flash plugin or with the HTML5 media player.

If you use extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

When I mouse over the video, which is just a black box, I get some stuttering on my mouse, my PC fans speed up, and the little blue loading circle pops and doesn't go away until I stop mousing over the video player. When I opened up the console this https://gyazo.com/79717e074a127a8822592b8a351a3fec is what showed up.

I'm kind of a noob when it comes to this stuff so I don't really know what any of that means. I also tried disabling and then removing adblock but I still have the same issues and the same messages in the web console. Thanks for the advice, though.

All the relevant plugins had been set to to ask or allow but I also set the permissions for the page to allow java and flash and unfortunately I'm still getting the same problem.

Yes, I use Java plugins quite a bit on scifinder, reaxys, etc. to draw compounds I need to look up. I also occasionally use programs like jmol for teaching and I need Java to use my university's VPN to access papers when I'm at home.

God damn it lol I just wanted to visit this page again and accidentally click mark solved in the email. My problem hasn't been solved. Is there any way to reverse this?

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:
